N900 minor update today

Thanks to the guys over at talk.maemo.org, a new fw update is on its way to everybody. Also on Twitter there is a word on this 2 steps update: first will come this minor one(16.2 MB) starting today, which will prepare the room for a second, major update (that will hopefully bring QT on board).

There is no changelog yet and supposedly it won’t be until the major 1.2 update at the end of Feb. Some of the lucky guys who were able to see and update their N900 are saying MicroB is moving smoother and the media player is louder

(thanks jrox at talk.mmaemo.org)

What you need to know / do:

1. You will need more space: disable and delete all the repos but the first 3 (which are read only, anyway) – this way you’ll gain up to 10-12 MB of rootfs; uninstall any major hogs like “OpenArena

2. You will need to backup everything

This update should be available over-the-air and from here: http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php

Don’t expect too much from this update:

No wi-fi battery drainage addressed

– No video call

– No OVI maps improvements

– No free navigation

– No USSD (so keep using USSD widget)

    Nokia N900 was proclaimed a flagship.Now what do we have:
    Ovi suite 2.0:Not for N900
    Music store:Not for N900
    OVI apps:Mostly crap
    Flash Plyer update:Nope
    Not a flagship but some kind of unloved stepdaughter.
    The way they treat it makes me think they don`t believe in Linux.
    Think they will chang to Android like all the others.

  3. Tony Green says:

    Is the only way to get this upgrade a re-flash? I thought it was supposed to be possible to do upgrades in-place, just like application upgrades and the last couple of system upgrades I’ve had. There’s no sign of any available upgrades showing up on my N900 at the moment…

  4. mark says:

    OK NEVERMIND JUST HAD TO UNINSTALL A LOT OF APPS…SO WHATS THE POINT OF HAVING 48GIGS OF THIS MEMORY IF I CANT EVEN HAVE A DECENT AMOUNT FOR APPS..SO I GOTTA KEEP DELETING STUFF EVERYTIME I WANT TO INSTALL SOMETHING NEW???? ANYWAYS WHERE IS MMS AND PORTRAIT MODE!!!

    Anyone else having issues with the GPS? It doesn’t seem to function properly. It use to pick up my position within the house but now it’s sticking to Coarse Accuracy.

  7. amjad says:

    @Abe –
    No need to remove all the repos! Follow these instructions:
    bring up an Xterminal
    sudo gainroot
    rm -rf /var/cache/apt/archives
    ln -s /home/user/MyDocs/.apt-cache-archives /var/cache/apt/archives

    The .apt-cache-archives hidden folder is already there. I don’t know why they decided not to use it!

    Nokia knows,that it is important to keep the Flash Player up to date.
    The N900 is supposed to be a Linux based microcomputer with telephone support.There were comments suggesting,Flash 10 could be a major problem,but it ain`t.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pee3nT4bPw4&feature=player_embedded# shows a demonstration last year.
    But I hate to see them sleeping while Palm Pre is running Flash 10 right now.

    Has any one from the UK been able to get this update OTA. Tried loads of times and no updates found?

  10. bowee says:

    hey, after i update my n900, i cannot use “facebook” via web…

    can you help me for that???

  11. Robert says:

    I found

    http://wiki.maemo.org/Free_up_rootfs_space

    Now have 59.xx MiB free and need to enter any root commands.
    I’ll get to that momentarily.

    This community rocks! I’ve been away from computer tinkering since my Commodore 64 gave out in the 80s. It’s still fun, it’s still scary and I’m enjoying it!

  12. Robert says:

    I was able to successfully update OTA. Initially I had “insufficient space error”. I deleted several applications I was not using, to the tune of about 35 megabytes. This is twice the amount the update claimed it needed. It then began the download. A message “… unsuccessful” pop-up and went away before I could fully read it. The update then proceeded without incident. My applications and settings remained intact.

    After bricking my N900 using the Nokia Software Updater with the last update I no longer use that tool. I was able to revive my N900 only because this community came to my rescue with the step by step instructions and proper files for re-flashing the device. Thank you.

    After the update I had 44.2 MiB | 227.88 MiB in my rootfs according to Conky.

    1- Is this going to be enough when the big update shows up later this month?
    2- How do I gain additional free rootfs space?

    • Mr Green says:

      @Robert

      I have no idea how big the next update will be, the first major update was over 60 MB if I remember well. For more info regarding rootfs space please check talk.maemo.org search tool.

  13. George says:

    @Mr Green

    Ok thanks got it up again… lost lots of stuff on the way but its ok

  14. MaKuMo says:

    38.45 :S Almost there guys °_°’

  15. George says:

    Hey I installed the update but it wont reboot, keeps falling into infinite loop with the message “installing software update. please do not interrupt”.

    any ideas how i can get it up and going again?

  16. MaKuMo says:

    @Mr Green

    Without Repos I’ve managed to free up to 38.45Mib. Already done autoremove with apt-get °_°’

  17. Abe says:

    No need to remove all the repos! Follow these instructions:
    bring up an Xterminal
    sudo gainroot
    rm -rf /var/cache/apt/archives

    The .apt-cache-archives hidden folder is already there. I don’t know why they decided not to use it!

  18. MaKuMo says:

    @Mr Green

    Just added them right now… Uninstalling and trying again 😉

  19. Dr. Felix Otto says:

    One of the advantages of Nokia N900 is the ability to show streaming media via Flash player.But this advantage diminishes every day,because Flash 10 is needed for more and more sides.Why the hell don`t they update the Flash player?We know that this is possible and working on N900 from another post.

    • Mr Green says:

      @Dr. Felix Otto
      Well, I’m afraid this flash player is not that simple to update. See all Nokia previous smartphones…

  20. MaKuMo says:

    @Mr Green

    It seems like there is the necessary space for update but for some reason got always that message… this is a Conky screenshot

  21. HITMAn says:

    The USSD (numbers like *315#) is not working yet…

  22. Umair Rashid says:

    Was getting following error during updating process:

    “Not enough memory in target location”

    later, I updated it via the Nokia PC Suite *biggest mistake* and lost all my settings and installed applications. Memory status still shows that stuff are installed but cant find any application.

  23. Andy says:

    Can’t get this over the air/wifi at the moment here in the UK!

  24. shark o neil says:

    if possible, use the cable and nokia software updater. remember to backup your things first.

  25. Xav says:

    I don’t agree about the wi-fi battery drainage because this bug claims to be fixed: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6615

    • Mr Green says:

      That’s good news! Ler’s see how it performs then! I’m on it already. Did you update? Is it fixed?

  26. MaKuMo says:

    I’ve removed those repos, uninstalled almost everything and it Keeps saying that there’s not enough memory 😦 Any advice?

    • Mr Green says:

      @MaKuMo
      Try rebooting; also install conky from testing repo and watch for rootfs space. Look into talk.maemo.org for “apt-get” instructions to clean up the rootfs (needs root, of course)
